Last Updated on

The 2019 Chevy Suburban is quite unlike any other SUV in the market. While its more modern rivals have started featuring curves and round edges to appeal to a wider set of buyers, the Suburban stands tall with its straight-cut brick-like lines which gives it an intimidating stance. The Suburban’s length also plays a major role in making the vehicle feel substantial and massive, which will definitely make people get out of your way.

The 2019 Chevy Suburban is powered by a 5.3L V8 engine which produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque from as low as 4100 RPM. There is also a more powerful 6.2L V8 which produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. of torque. The 6.2L is only available as an option on the Premier trim’s RST package. These engines are offered across a range of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive setups. Also, they include cylinder deactivation technology which claims up to 16 MPG and a range of up to 682 miles if driven with a light foot. The Suburban kicks off at $52,095 and is available across a range of three variants which includes the utilitarian LS, the mid-level LT and the top of the line Premier.

Engine & Transmission

The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban offers a choice of two engines which include the base 5.3L V8 and the powerful 6.2L V8. While the less powerful 5.3L gets a much more palatable fuel economy number, it feels sluggish in comparison to the 6.2L. The 6.2L, on the other hand, is only available with the top-of-the-line Premier trim. The 5.3L V8 produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.2L V8 produces a whopping 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, which is really good for a car this size.

In terms of acceleration, the Suburban goes from 0-60 in 8 seconds for the 5.3L and a blistering 5.8 seconds for the 6.2L V8. This makes the 6.2L equipped Suburban the fastest full-sized truck in its segment.

We know that 8 seconds may not make a difference for some but if you really need speed in this truck goes for the 6.2L V8 to give you that 5.8 0-60 MPH time.

Ride & Handling

The standard Suburban gets a regular suspension setup which might get bouncy when the car is not fully loaded, especially at high speeds. This makes the car feel very unsettled. However, when the Suburban is fully loaded up, it settles down and offers a stable ride quality. The optional air suspension on the Premier trim does improve things though since it automatically adjusts according to the terrain and maintains composure even on the worst of roads. As standard, all cars come with disc brakes on all wheels and the brake pedal provides progressive feedback during braking.

2019 Chevy Suburban Fuel Economy (MPG)

Since the Suburban is extremely massive and bulky, you really cannot expect a great gas mileage. While the 5.3L V8 is rated at 16 MPG (15/22), the larger and more powerful 6.2L V8 is rated at 15 MPG(14/23).

2019 Chevy Suburban’s Interior

The Suburban’s interiors have always been functional and user-friendly. However, in terms of looks, the Suburban’s interiors feel extremely basic and the 8-inch touch screen looks very small in the otherwise massive dashboard. The plastic quality is also quite sub-par and definitely not expected at this price point. Overall, while the Suburban is a very spacious car, though, it really doesn’t give off a luxury vehicle vibe.

Seating & Comfort

The Suburban is available in a wide variety of seating formats. The base LS variant gets a 9-seater arrangement for the three rows, with a bench seat for each row. These seats lack proper support and definitely won’t be comfortable over longer journeys. As an option, you can swap out the front bench for two bucket seats in the front, which brings down the capacity to 8. The bucket seats are a significant improvement over the standard bench seat and would definitely be comfortable for the driver and co-passenger.

The front bucket seats also get power-adjustable and heated function for additional comfort. This configuration also provides better bolstering for the second row and thus improves comfort. From the LT trim and up, you can opt for bucket seats for the rear row, with electric folding in the top Premier trim. While this does bring the capacity down to 7, the second-row bucket seats are extremely well-cushioned and provide excellent support over longer journeys. You can even have these seats heated in the higher trims.

Chevy Suburban Infotainment

As standard, the Suburban gets Chevy’s 8-inch MyLink touchscreen system which gets a six-speaker setup as standard. The base variant also gets an aux port and one USB port for added convenience. As you go up the range, the touchscreen system also gains the following features:

  1. Up to 10-speakers and a better audio system from Bose
  2. Two more USB ports
  3. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  4. Navigation
  5. Added performance-related features on the 6.2L V8 equipped vehicle.

Thus, taking insurance, financing, state fees, maintenance, repair cost, and depreciation into consideration, the Chevrolet Suburban will cost $57,106 to own over a period of five years, which is a considerable amount of money (greater than the MSRP), taking into consideration that this is just the cost of ownership for the base LS trim.

2019 Chevy Suburban’s Competition

2019 Chevy Suburban Vs 2019 Ford Expedition

Ford Expedition is the Suburban’s major competitor in the market. While the Expedition has a larger and more usable third-row seat and equips a better array of modern features, the Chevy offers better cargo capacity and ride quality.
The Expedition’s base turbocharged V6 produces more power and torque than Chevrolet’s standard 5.3L V8, which definitely means that the Ford gets a much higher towing capacity.
In terms of price, the Expedition is nearly neck-and-neck with the Suburban. But, in terms of MSRP, the Expedition has a lower starting price along with more modern features as standard. But, the Chevy’s ubiquitous 9 seater layout is not found on the Expedition.

What Do We Think About 2019 Chevy Suburban?

The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban is the car to go for if you want a big and muscular SUV with an intimidating stance. It also comes with a decent array of features and its unique 9-seater layout can help larger families move more people with ease and in comfort. However, the Suburban’s dashboard feels dated and is in urgent need of a refresh. But, even if the third row might be slightly on the cramped side, the Suburban makes up for that with the excellent bucket seats available in the first two rows which offer great comfort over long distances. The Suburban gets our seal of approval as a long-distance cruiser, but you should look elsewhere if you need a daily city-slicker.
