General Motors has once again brought in the small and affordable city car, the 2019 Chevrolet Spark, in the US market. The Spark, which was initially marketed as Daewoo Matiz in the late 80s, was later acquired by General Motors and continued to be sold as a Chevrolet car, which has always been a popular choice among the small car buyers. Chevrolet unveiled the fourth generation of this hatchback in 2015 and for 2019, it has also received a facelift.

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark basically comes in three trim levels, namely the base-level LS, then the 1LT, followed by the top-level 2LT. Apart from that, there is also another model, the Spark Activ. The Spark Activ is a bit different from the regular Spark and thus is sold as a different car.

Starting at $13,220 and going up till $17,720 for the top model, the 2019 Spark comes equipped with a 4-cylinder ECOTEC 1.4 L DOHC engine that churns out a power of 98 Horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet claims it to be fuel efficient at 30 MPG in the City and 38 MPG on Highways. In this 2019 Chevy Spark review we will try to cover all the important aspects before buying a Chevy Spark for yourself. We’ll review the cars in many factors such as Acceleration, braking, fuel efficiency, cargo space and much more.

Which 2019 Chevy Spark We Recommend?

The top trim, the 2LT, probably offers the best value for the money. It comes loaded with hi-tech features, has refined looks, and also has a more upscale interior than the other models. And at a reasonable price, it definitely stands as a perfect package. So, we recommend that if you are looking for an affordable but comfortable and plush hatchback, then the 2LT variant is a good option to go with.

2019 Chevrolet Spark Performance

Engine & Transmission

All models of the 2019 Chevrolet Spark are equipped with a 4-cylinder ECOTEC 1.4L DOHC engine. It offers around 98 hp @ 6200 RPM and 94 lb-ft of torque @ 4400RPM. All the trim levels have 5-speed manual transmission as standard, but there is also Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) as an available option.

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark does not have great acceleration. The 1.4L engine does little to bring power to its wheels and that, coupled with the 5-speed manual transmission, makes the Spark not quite suitable for high-speed maneuvers. The CVT transmission is also a disappointment in this regard, and though it increases the fuel efficiency to a certain extent, the acceleration of the car is affected in return.

The time taken to reach 60 mph from a stop is not quite great in the 2019 Chevrolet Spark, and its competitors can do better.

The 2019 Spark comes equipped with 4-wheel Antilock and vented front disc/rear drum brakes. The brake pedal is quite firm and responsive, and efficiently controls the speed of the car.

2019 Chevy Spark’s Fuel Economy (MPG)

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark offers a decent fuel economy, especially within the city. The 5-speed manual transmission makes it up to 29 MPG in the City, while the CVT increases it to 30 MPG. On highways, the fuel economy is estimated at around 38 MPG with both Manual and CVT transmission. The combined mileage for the manual transmission is 33 MPG, while that with the CVT is 34 MPG.

All the models of the 2019 Chevrolet Spark have a fuel tank capacity of 9 gallons. It has a cruising range in the city of 261 miles with full tank, and of 342 miles in Highway with a full tank

2019 Chevrolet Spark Interior

The interior of the 2019 Chevrolet Spark is not at par with its rivals, which have used more upscale materials. There is a lot of plastic use in the Spark’s cabin that feels a bit cheap. However, in terms of technologies, the 2019 Spark has managed to implement some advanced techs and features. The standard features in the Spark include a rearview camera, manual single-zone air-conditioning, rear cargo security shelf, a rear center console with storage tray, Driver infotainment center, rear window defogger and outside temperature display. Apart from these, there are four cup holders, two in the front and two at the back, and Auxiliary power outlet in the front center console, as well as 2 illuminated USB ports.

Seating & Comfort

Being a subcompact car, the 2019 Chevrolet Spark accommodates four persons. However, the rear passengers get very little leg space in the Spark, due to its small size. The rear seats are not comfortable for tall passengers and lack any lateral support and hence they feel cramped. The lower models get cloth upholstery, while the Activ and 2LT trims come with standard leatherette seats.

The front high-back bucket seats are standard for all the trims and are coupled with adjustable head restraints. Heated front seats are standard only in Activ and 2LT models.
The Spark’s seats are manually adjustable in all models. The diver’s seat is 4-way manually adjustable, while the front passenger seat is 2-way manually adjustable and comes with a reclining feature. The rear seats also have LATCH Connections for child seats. The front seats are overall spacious, but the comfort level is below par, while the rear seats are a bit cramped.

2019 Chevy Spark Cargo Space
2019 Chevy Spark Cargo Space

In order to make the 2019 Spark suitable for city driving, Chevrolet has reduced the cargo space. With all seats in their position, the amount of cargo offered is a meager 11.1 cu-ft, which is less even for any subcompact car. Although the rear seats are 60/40 split-fold, they fail to fold down completely and further adds to a lack of space. With seats folded down flat, the 2019 Spark’s cargo capacity increases to 27.20 cubic feet, which is just enough for daily use.

Now coming to some plus points in the 2019 Chevy Spark, the infotainment system has received an update for good. The new Spark comes with Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system that comes with a 7-inch diagonal color touch screen display. The new infotainment system offers a number of hi-tech features like ‘my Chevrolet’ Mobile App with which the car-door can be remotely locked or unlocked as well as many other functions. The SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio is also equipped which allows you to listen to over 150 channels of ad-free music from any genre you like. Apart from these, there is both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility as well as USB Ports, built-in 4G LTE WI-Fi, Chevrolet Connected Access with Chevrolet Smart Driver.

2019 Chevy Spark Against The Competition

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark receives strong competition from the 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage and the 2019 Kia Rio.

2019 Chevrolet Spark vs 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage

Priced almost equally as the 2019 Spark, the 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage is a good subcompact car for a city commute. Although the standard engine variation of the Mirage is the 1.2L i-3 engine, which is even less powerful than that of the Spark, it has a better fuel efficiency than the Spark and also has a larger fuel tank. The Mirage’s cabin space is similar to that of the Spark. While the Spark can seat four persons, the Mirage has a five-person seating capacity. The Mirage is slightly bigger too, in terms of dimension. However, the Cargo Capacity of the Mirage is quite huge when compared to that of the Spark. The Mirage can carry around 47 cubic feet of luggage with the rear seats folded down, while the Chevy Spark has a maximum cargo capacity of 27.2 cubic feet. As far as features and technologies go, both the Spark and Mirage stand on a similar footing.

2019 Chevrolet Spark vs 2019 Kia Rio

The new generation Kia Rio has received quite a few accolades from the car buyers. Though priced a bit higher than the other cars in the segment, the 2019 Rio is both efficient and capable in its performance, driving and comfort areas. Being equipped with a 1.6L i-4 engine, the Rio produces an impressive 130 horsepower and 119 pound-feet of torque. It even returns equivalent fuel economy as the Chevrolet Spark. The Kia Rio seats five and has cruise control as standard, as well as some other additional features.
