Ride & Handling
The Sonic is a spirited puny car with crisp steering and handling, especially with the sport-tuned suspension. Unexpectedly, the manual gearbox is a little clunky, and the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine lacks responsiveness at low rpm. tilt-telescopic steering wheel which is made for the most comfortable rides of any small vehicle. Putting the tests for over the day, the seats blended into the background and never caused any noticeable discomfort or dead spots. Similar to a blue video-game hedgehog which shares the same name, the Chevy Sonic also moves around with athleticism, and it is pretty engaging to drive. Some models incorporate a sporty suspension that tightens up handling, but at the expense of ride quality, you can experience more bumps and shocks from the road. It gains points for good government crash-test score, but it lacks automatic emergency braking, something Chevy now offers on its Spark mini car but not the Sonic.

Mostly constant on every trim the 138-hp 1.4-liter turbocharged engine available with manual or automatic transmissions, the 1.4-liter Ecotec engine made for some seriously fun driving. On the sedan models, the EPA estimates are around 26 miles per gallon within the city limits and 34 mpg on the highway with the automatic transmission or 27 mpg in city/38 mpg on the road with the 6-speed manual. The 5-door hatchback gets 26 mpg in city/35 mpg on the road with the manual and 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway with the automatic.

The Chevy Sonic comfortably seats five people in both sedan and hatchback models, and its accommodations are generous for such a mini car. The front seats offer all-day-long comfort with plenty of room for a tall driver or passenger to adjust to a relaxing position. The second row of this subcompact is also roomy enough for adults to stretch out and make themselves comfortable on long drives.
While the competitors have come out with more latest models that maximize interior space, the 2019 Chevy Sonic still struck a bit behind in some regards. The front seats are cozy, but rear-seat passengers will find a little cabin to work. The sedan model sits on similar wheelbase as the hatchback, and while it packs an impressive 14.9 cubic feet of trunk space, tight rear seats, but taller adults will find restricted headroom. Be it sedan or hatchback, the Sonic’s 5-passenger interior pleases the eyes, looks spacious for its compact size and has an air of sophistication thanks to the dominating standard 7-inch touch screen which is the center front of the cockpit. The rear seat holds more room in the segment, and the versatile and recommendable hatchback models offer only 47.7 cubic feet of cargo room with foldable rear seats. But that is still less than a Honda Fit hatchback, but the Chevy holds more space than offered by the Honda with the rear seats up around 19 cubic feet vs. the Fit’s little 16.6 cubic feet. Even the handy dual-glove-box arrangement is impressive.
The 2019 Sonic comes well-equipped with a bright standard touch-screen infotainment system that includes smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. Chevrolet’s MyLink interface is praised for its intuitive operations and interactive menus. It might need an extra split second for the screen to process the touch commands, though.
Despite Sonic’s technological prowess, the base trim lacks common amenities which are standard in nearly every other competitor car, like power windows and cruise control. One has to move above the standard trim to get these conveniences which might show some negative feelings in the budget.
Safety has been a top priority for the new Sonic. StabiliTrak, Anti-lock braking, traction control systems, and hill descent work in conjunction with one another, providing complete driver command. Unless you don’t mind rolling on steel wheels lacking the cruise control or cranking your windows, it is better to choose the LT sedan or hatchback, each starting below $19,000. Fully Loaded, and even the slightly pricey Sonic 5-door hatchback checks in around $25,000. The Sonic’s price is a little bit similar to the Toyota Yaris and somewhat lower than the Honda Fit. But it is not quite as small as the Nissan Versa, Rio, Kia, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent or the hard-to-recommend Mitsubishi Mirage. Still, this subcompact minicar represents a good value.

Honda Fit is one of the most all-rounder subcompact cars that have tons of passenger and cargo space, along with a luxurious upscale cabin that justifies its sticker price. However, the Sonic has the best edge in infotainment thanks to its standard touch screen; you’ll have to upgrade to a mid-range Fit to get this interface.
