C8 Corvette is going to be THE thing to watch in 2020 from Chevy. This mid-engine corvette is gonna be faster and better than the C7 in every aspect. On the one hand, 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is getting appreciated with awards and mentions all around the world but on the other, some are criticizing Chevy for only offering a single transmission option. Yes, it’s true that Corvette will only come with M1L dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission. That being said, Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter cleared the air regarding no manual transmission in an exclusive interview with the Autoline After Hours.
What Did the Chief Engineer Have to say?
In an episode of more than 1-hour runtime on Autoline Network, Tadge Juechter talked to the panel about many motives behind their actions to not give the manual transmission. He told the panel that there are many reasons, the biggest being commercial.
“Nobody buys them and no one’s willing to make them at a loss for us,” he adds, laughing. “It’s hard enough to find someone to make a bespoke, high-volume [automatic], you know because the vast majority of people choose the automatic. We used to offer the Z06, ZR1 only in manual transmission, and as soon as we made the automatic available, [it was] 70, 80 percent of the volume.”
The Chief Engineer also answered some questions on the same at the car’s world debut in July 2019. He even mentioned that this decision of going auto breaks his heart as he has never driven anything other than a manual before. And countless others share his sentiments who were waiting for this mid-engine car to arrive.
What are the problems Chevy faced with manuals?
Tadge tells the panel that adding a manual to a mid-mounted V8 platform was very difficult to achieve. There were many who opposed, and to those Tadge gave a very clear reply:
“You want a slick-shifting manual. Now we have an engine between your shifter and the transmission, which means you can’t use mechanical linkages, it has to be a cable, which makes it kind of rubbery and vague,”Juechter says
Juechter adds in the ending that the Chevrolet Corvette offers a good feel of manual combined with the automatic. One thing that made it clear was the ability of M1L to pop the gearbox into neutral while on the run. This transmission will let you free rev at those stoplights turning every head in your direction.
