The former Host of “Tonight’s show” is having a fun-filled retirement by driving some of the best sorts of cars which we only dream of owning. Considering the popularity of his show “Jay Leno’s Garage” it was no surprise that he was the only one out of General Motors’ employee to have a look at pre-production 2020 Corvette Stingray Z51 convertible and also film a video with it. A week ago in Los Angeles, Corvette showcased its Stingray hardtop in his backyard, such love for this jaded petrol head.
One of the most knowledgeable gearheads in the country, everyone listens to Leno when he is talking about cars. A task like this can only be pulled off by an intriguing personality like him, and he was joined by Tadge Jeuchter, the chief executive engineer behind the new Corvette. Both of them dig deep into the finer details of the first mid-engined Corvette in history. An idea, which was proposed by engineers way before, but it sadly took almost 60 years for Corvette to turn it into reality.
The conversation started in a usual way where the first subject was an all-new 6.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 powertrain dishing out 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Everything is built from scratch, and the mid-engined configuration was the only way to make it faster and handle better. The stingray can climb up to 60 mph under 3 seconds, and the dual-clutch transmission is way more snappy than a torque converter. The initial plan was to fit a fabric roof, but later on, a hardtop was used to improve the noise and vibration in the cabin.
Coming to the interior, which is inspired by a jet a fighter and the layout is very driver focussed. The legroom is also increased because of the rear engine design and moving the driver seat 16 inches closer to the front axle to make it more agile while cornering. Surprisingly the Corvette stingray has a copious amount cargo space, rare thing to have this kind of utility in a mid-engine car.
Overall, it’s a great exploratory video of the Corvette C8 starring two men who know what they’re talking about. We will not spoil the fun for you and let you watch the video.
