2019 Chevy Malibu Performance
Engine & Transmission
For 2019, the new Chevy Malibu comes with two engine options. The entry-level trim to the LT trim, the sedan is equipped with a 160-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The engine is coupled with an FWD drivetrain. The CVT is also available for the base trim beside the higher trim levels. The second option available is the 250-hp engine. This is available only in the range-topping model and comes mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and an FWD drivetrain.
When it comes to acceleration, the new Malibu offers a decent experience right off the line. The standard 1.5-L mill offers a good amount of acceleration, but with the 2.0-Litre one, it completely changes. The latter offers a far better and punchy experience and thus makes the driving less boring. All thanks to the 250 hp 2.0 L motor, it goes from a complete standstill to 60 mph in just 7.8 seconds, while the standard 1.5 L motor takes a bit more to reach 60 mph.
Ride & Handling
The base engine is not exactly the best option. The acceleration is weak and the power drawn is also sluggish. But, for the power enthusiasts, the 250-hp turbocharged engine can do wonders. The acceleration is sharp. The ride is comfortable and the adjustable nature of the steering wheel makes it easy to drive. The steering wheel is heated in the upper trim levels for additional comfort. In terms of cabin noise, almost all of the outside noise is filtered, thereby making the cabin silent.
Braking is a part where the Malibu feels smooth and easy to drive. All thanks to its well-tuned pedal, the process feels easy and smooth. Whether on the city roads or on an interstate, the brakes make this maneuverable and thus make the driver feel more confident at all times. The car takes just 113 feet to come to a complete standstill form 60 mph, which is quite impressive in its class.
Chevy Impala Fuel Economy
The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu has a decent fuel efficiency with both the engines. The standard 1.5L 160-hp engine offers a mileage of about 29 mpg in city roads and about 36 mpg on the highways. Surprisingly, the 250-hp motor also offers a similar mileage figure as that of the smaller engine.
2019 Chevy Malibu Interior
The cabin is designed while keeping the comfort of the passengers in mind. However, to keep the prices affordable, there is a noticeable compromise in the cabin materials. On the other hand, the seats are quite spacious. The cabin is ideal for 5 passengers. Two rows offer plenty of space for the 6-footers. There is enough legroom and headroom for tall passengers. But there is a down point regarding the seats. They are not supportive enough for long journeys, which makes them not ideal for long drives. Also, the cheap quality materials used in the cabin make it look dated and unrefined compared to the rivals. Adding to this, the lack of soft-touch materials further takes a toll on the overall comfort.
- 8-inch infotainment screen
- HD screen in the range-topper
- Wireless charging
- 9-speaker audio system
- Android Auto and Apple CarPlay standard across all trims
- Charging port and USB port
- Inbuilt navigation system
- Chevrolet smart and intuitive touch screen
- Satellite and HD Radio
The infotainment system is one of the most attractive features. The infotainment system is upgraded and made more refined than the previous generation to cater to the needs of the passengers and the driver.

2019 Chevy Malibu Competition
2019 Chevy Malibu VS 2019 Honda Accord
Honda cars usually have an upper edge against the other cars in the segment. The Accord is one tough competitor that is ahead of the Malibu in various aspects. The most important difference in the quality of the cabin. The Accord sports a well-designed cabin as Honda uses a better quality of materials and is also quite spacious than what the Malibu offers. The number of infotainment features is also more than the Malibu. Besides the infotainment system, the upscale cabin also has a good set of active safety features.
2019 Chevy Malibu VS 2019 Toyota Camry
One of the major differences between them is performance. If the criterion is a good performance and the budget is not an issue, the Camry comes in as a better option. Moreover, the quality of the interiors offered with the Camry is also better. The only thing which makes the Malibu more attractive in this competition is its lower price tag. Other than this, the Camry gets the upper hand.
What Do We think about the 2019 Chevy Malibu?
2019 Chevy Malibu is a good midsize-sedan but it looks like it has lost the track in the midway. The quality of the interior materials and the cabin experience can be improved by incorporating upscale materials and by making the seats more supportive and comfortable. The infotainment features and active safety features are quite attractive but the improvements can be made on the grounds of performance, especially in the lower trim levels.
