Which 2019 Chevy Bolt EV Do We Recommend?
Though both the trims run on the same mechanism, the Premier trim is the best one because it isn’t much more pricey than the fully equipped base LT trim. Though both safety packages are now available even on the LT trim, the Premier’s standard leather upholstery with additional rear-seat comfort features and the optional Bose audio system are worth the slight difference in price that is just a bit higher than the LT.

The Bolt EV produces a thrust of power to the front wheels with the impressive 200 horsepower electric motor. The car is driven by a single-speed automatic direct-drive transmission. The ride comfort is pretty smooth and the performance is amazing.
The Bolt EV has a single electric 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque to provide outstanding performance. It is a front-wheel-drive car powered by a 60-kWh battery. It has an astounding 238 miles of range. It takes 9.3 hours to charge with the 240V charger. The Dc fast charger gives you about 90 miles of range in just 30 minutes. The transmission is a single-speed direct-drive.
When you press the Bolt’s accelerator, it blends onto freeways with ease with plenty of reserve power for passing on two-lane roads and highways. The Bolt EV can hit from 0-60 mph in just 6.5 seconds, making it a fine family electric car. The top speed of the EV is limited to 90 mph, which is very less compared to traditional cars. The Chevy Bolt EV features a 200 horsepower electric motor, a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and a 7.2-kW high-voltage on-board charger. The all-electric range of 238 miles is more than average for a vehicle in this price range. Its efficiency is 128 MPGe in the city and 110 MPGe on the highway.
Riding and handling
The Bolt has unique regenerative braking among EVs with the standard friction brakes in Default mode, which makes it feel easy to slow or stop the car. The regenerative braking recharges the battery by storing energy yat slow speeds. It stops from 60-0 mph in just 116 feet. If you shift the gear to the Low mode, it goes into one-pedal driving in which you can press the pedal to accelerate and release the pedal to slow or even stop the car without even having to use the brake. There is also another cool feature called Regen on demand in which you can pull a paddle at the back of the steering wheel, which is similar to the low mode for strong regenerative braking similar to the Low mode.

Bolt’s interior is functional and spacious with lots of fronts and rear room, facilitating easy entry and exit. The simple controls are easy to use. The only drawback is the low-grade interior materials, like the plastic interior panels and the thin carpet. The interior design is well-planned with the underfloor battery position that doesn’t interfere with passenger or cargo space. The Bolt provides a reasonable storage area concerning its size. The center console, glovebox, and the cupholders are positioned well and the open bin and extra cubbies provide storage for a purse and smartphones. The 16.9 cubic feet trunk volume is useful and the removable floor panel cover can be used for hidden storage. If the floor panel cover is removed, you can keep larger items. If you fold the rear split seats, you get a bigger space for storage.
The controls are arranged thoughtfully according to the function with an easy to use volume knob and tune buttons below the touchscreen. The climate control is also understandable and easy to use. You can configure the instrument panel in three ways. The fact that we liked is the range-coaching features in the Enhanced settings. Ride comfort is smooth and stable at highway speeds. It soaks up tiny bumps easily, but the ride gets clunky fi you move around rough roads ith fractures, cracks, and sharp edges due to the basic suspension at the rear. The climate control warms up the cabin quickly because the electric heat doesn’t require to wait until the engine heats up, unlike traditional cars. If the cabin reaches an optimum heat, you can turn it down and instead rely on the heated seats.
You can get in and out of the car easily with the doors that open wide and the roofline is tall and the seats are correctly placed, neither tall nor wide. The height-adjustable driver seat and the telescoping steering wheel provides an optimum driving position. The weight and cost-saving aim lead to a thin carpet, unprotected footrest, and hard plastic panels, which is pretty much disappointing for a car at this price range.
The Bolt’s interior feels larger than it looks with lots of head and legroom and the front seat is adjustable and can be moved with no trouble. Visibility is very good with the low cowl, high roofline, and the low window-sill. You can ee out of the sides easily and the mirror coverage is good with a very small blind spot. In the premium trim, you get an interesting rear camera mirror. The non-existent engine noise, shifting noise, and noise produced by accessory drive belts. There is wind noise but it isn’t bothersome. Slight tire noise exists, but the well-muted cabin makes up for this.
How are those seats like?
The seats are stiff and feel like a chair. The Bolt’s front seats are supportive, but lack padding and are small to make you feel like sitting on them instead of in them. The seat padding is so thin that you can almost feel the edges of the seat frame through the padding.
- The Bolt EV features a unique Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, which uses minimum power. The Bolt supports good smartphone connectivity with four USB ports. The unavailability of built-in navigation is the oddity. However, pairing your smartphone with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto might help with navigation fro your smartphone.
- Smartphone integration with the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is easy and if you don’t prefer these interfaces, you can opt for the Bluetooth connectivity. There are two USB ports in the front and in the Premier you get two extra charging USB ports in the rear
- The Bolt EV’s big 10.2-inch touchscreen is quite slow to respond. The fact that we liked is the placement of the fixed volume knob and volume button behind the right steering spoke. It is easy to access from there so that you don’t have to use the clumsy and sophisticated touchscreen every time.
- Driver aids in the Premier include standard rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring. All these features are optional on the LT. The other optional systems include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance.
- The standard voice control works well and if you have active Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you can access Siri and Google Voice by holding the button longer. This provides even more voice-activated data.
How much will the 2019 Chevy Bolt EV Cost?
The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV LT has an MSRP of $37,495 including location, while the Premier starts at $41,780, both include tax credits and state or local incentives. Comparatively, the most affordable “S” version of the Nissan Leaf stickers is considerably cheaper with $31,000 price, but lacks the features and has just about half of the Bolt’s range of miles per-charge. The 2019 Chevy Bolt EV is a great choice for people looking for sustainable energy. Though the Tesla Model 3 is more powerful and has a longer range of miles, the Bolt EV is more reliable and its availability is more than the Tesla, which is available in very fewer units. Though the Nissan Leaf is cheaper and has a larger trunk than the Bolt EV, it has fewer features and less power than the Bolt. If you are okay with the substandard interior and basic suspension, you can choose the Bolt EV without a doubt.
